Blazers Well Represented on D2CAA Super Region Two Football Teams

VALDOSTA, Ga. – A total of 13 selections and five first team honorees highlight the Valdosta State football players who were named to the D2 Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-Super Region Two Football Teams, announced Thursday morning.  
 
The Gulf South Conference had a region-best 24 selections to the all-region team with 11 first team honorees and 13 named to the second team.  The South Atlantic Conference had 15 selections with nine on the first team and six on the second team.  West Florida sophomore quarterback Austin Reed was named Offensive Player of the Year for the region, while Bowie State sophomore defensive lineman Jonathan Ross was named Defensive Player of the Year. 
 
Heading into the quarterfinal round of the playoffs this weekend, Bowie State has five all-region honorees competing, with three first team selections and two second team honorees and VSU has its 13 selections for a total of 18 slated to play in the game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. 
 
The 13 total selections for the Blazers marked the most in the region, along with the five named to the first team and eight to the second team.  Senior offensive lineman and Gene Upshaw Award finalist Ralph Singleton and graduate student wide receiver/return specialist Brian Saunds earned first team honors at return specialist and second team accolades at wide receiver.  Sophomore defensive lineman Brian Williams earned first team honors as did senior linebacker Nick Moss and senior safety Mondrell Jefferson.
 
Singleton, a native of Sumter, S.C., became the third Blazer in as many years to be named finalist for the prestigious Gene Upshaw Award.  Current Blazer graduate assistant Jeremy King was runner-up for the award in 2018, while former standout Adonis Sealey was a finalist in 2019. 
 
This season, Singleton has anchored an offensive line for an offense that is second nationally in total offense at 525.7 yards per game and set a school-record 719 yards of offense last Saturday in the Blazers' 66-35 victory versus West Georgia in the second round of the NCAA postseason playoffs.  In addition, Singleton has blocked for an offense that is fifth nationally in scoring offense (44.3), fifth in rushing offense (269.8) and 20th in passing efficiency at a 153.39 clip.  
 
Singleton earned First Team All-Gulf South Conference honors this season and second team all-league accolades in 2019.  He has started all 11 games for the three-time GSC champion Blazers and helped lead the team to a 10-1 record so far this season.   He has graded out at over 91 percent this season with over 40 pancake/knockdown blocks.  He hasn't allowed a single pressure or sack all season as VSU has allowed just one sack as a team for the season to lead the nation. 
 
Saunds, a Darien, Ga., native, earned first team all-conference honors this season at both a wide receiver and return specialist.  He earned first team all-conference honors in 2019 as a return specialist and second team all-conference honors in 2018 as a wide receiver.  This season, he has started all 11 games and leads the team in catches with 59 for a league-best 990 yards for 21st nationally and has four touchdown receptions.  Saunds is 40th nationally and third in the GSC in punt return average at a 7.3 clip as he has 20 returns for 147 yards this season.  Saunds averages 5.5 receptions per game for 41stnationally and third in the league and his 90.0 yards per game average is good for 22nd nationally and best in the league.  
 
Williams, a native of Chipley, Fla., earned first team all-conference honors this season as he has started all 11 games up front for the Blazer defense.  Williams has 33 total tackles on the year with 17 solo stops, while he leads the team with 10.5 tackles for loss for 43 yards and leads the team in sacks with 5.5 for 35 yards.  Williams has one pass breakup and six quarterback hurries on the year.  Williams had a season-high five tackles with 1.5 sacks for 14 yards against Albany State earlier this season and matched his five tackles against Delta State and North Greenville.  
 
Moss, a Dearing, Ga., native, also earned first team all-conference honors this season as he has started ten games this season leading the Blazers with 97 total tackles and 48 solo stops.  Moss has 3.5 tackles for loss for 20 yards, along with four pass breakups, three quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery for 44 yards.  He has recorded double-digit tackles five times with a career-high 17 tackles against Delta State (Oct. 9).  He earned GSC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice this season.  Moss is fifth in the GSC in solo tackles per game (4.4) and is 34th nationally for tops in the league in total tackles per game at an 8.8 clip.  
 
Jefferson hails from Sanderson, Fla., and has also had an outstanding season as he is second on the team in tackles with 64 and has started all 11 contests so far.  Jefferson has 29 solo tackles with one sack for eight yards, one interception, one hurry and one pass breakup.  He is tied for the national lead with four fumble recoveries for 21 yards and has one forced fumble. Jefferson returned two fumble recoveries for touchdowns in the season-opener against Savannah State.   He recorded a season-high eight tackles twice, including last Saturday in the 66-35 victory over No. 13 West Georgia.  
 
Each of these five players will move onto the national ballot for All-America consideration.  The D2CCA All-America Teams are scheduled to be announced Dec. 16.  
 
Earning second team all-region honors, along with Saunds, were junior quarterback Ivory Durham, junior running back Seth McGill, senior tight end Chris Barrett, graduate offensive lineman Jeremiah Campbell, graduate wide receiver Lio'undre Gallimore, junior linebacker Jameon Gaskin and graduate defensive back Christian Matthew.  
 
Durham, a Jacksonville, Fla., native, has had an outstanding season under center for the Blazers, leading the team to a 10-1 record and a share of the Blazers' third-straight GSC title.  Durham is 12th nationally in total offense at 313.7 yards per game for second in the GSC, while he is sixth in the GSC in rushing yards (752) and is second to McGill in the GSC in rushing touchdowns with 12 for 22nd nationally.  He had a career outing on Saturday where he went 22 of 31 passing for 354 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while he had 14 carries for 92 yards and three rushing scores.   
 
McGill, a Miami, Fla., native, has had a career year as well as he is fifth nationally in rushing yards per carry (7.26) for second in the GSC, while he is 16th nationally and tops in the GSC in rushing touchdowns with 13.  McGill is 21st nationally in rushing yards with 1,103 and 21st nationally in rushing yards per game at 100.3 for tops in the league.  McGill is 26th nationally in scoring at 8.2 points per game.   He earned first team all-conference honors this season.
 
Barrett, a Clearwater, Fla., native, has had an outstanding first season for the red and black as he earned first team all-conference honors this season and second team all-region.  Barrett has played in all 11 games with four starts, recording seven catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns.  He is averaging 7.9 yards per catch this season.  Barrett scored his first touchdown against Albany State (Sept. 18) and his second against Delta State (Oct. 9).  Barrett has been a key blocker in the Blazers' outstanding season where the team is second nationally and tops in the GSC in total offense at 525.7 yards per game and averaging 44.3 points per game for second in the GSC and fifth nationally.  VSU also has been outstanding in the running game averaging 269.8 yards per game for second in the league and fifth nationally.  Campbell, a native of Gahanna, Ohio, has started all 11 games on the offensive line for the Blazers this season earning second team all-region honors.  
 
Gallimore, a native of Miami Gardens, Fla., earned second team all-conference honors this season and earned second team all-league honors in 2019, while recording first team all-league honors in 2018.  He has started all 11 games this season with 51 receptions for 914 yards and a 17.9 average per reception.  Gallimore has 13 receiving touchdowns and is averaging 83.1 yards per game.  His 13 receiving touchdowns are good for ninth nationally and tops in the GSC, while his 14 total touchdowns 
are 25th nationally and second in the GSC.  His 83.1 yards receiving per game are good for 33rd nationally and third in the league, while the 914 yards receiving are good for 30th nationally and third in the league.  He has one kick return for a touchdown on a 96-yarder against Delta State this season.  Gallimore is 46th nationally and second in the GSC in all-purpose yards at 116.4 per game.  He is fifth in the GSC in combined kick returns with 366 yards.  
 
Gaskin, a native of Douglas, Ga., is third on the team in tackles with 61 and 25 solo stops.  Gaskin has two tackles for loss for ten yards and one sack for six yards, while he has three pass breakups, two hurries and two forced fumbles.  Gaskin earned second team all-league honors this season and earned GSC Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2018.  
 
Matthew, a Columbus, Ga., native, earned first team all-conference honors this season and has played in 11 games with ten starts.  He leads the team with 14 pass breakups for 14th nationally and tops in the GSC in pass breakups per game at a 1.4 clip.  He has 27 tackles on the year with 17 solo stops, one interception return, for a touchdown for 40 yards against Shorter and blocked a kick against North Greenville.  He had a season-high five pass deflections against Delta State, helping lead VSU to a 55-0 shutout of the Statesmen.
