INDIANAPOLIS – The Valdosta State women's soccer team is seventh in the South Region in the first NCAA Division II Women's Soccer region rankings, announced Wednesday by the NCAA.
The Blazers are currently 9-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. VSU is currently on a two-match win streak and has won four of its last five matches. This weekend, the Blazers travel to Montevallo at 6 p.m. ET on Friday and Auburn Montgomery on Sunday for two of their final three regular-season matchups.
Gulf South Conference members Lee and Mississippi College lead the rankings in first and second while Christian Brothers come in at fifth. Embry-Riddle, Palm Beach Atlantic and Florida Tech, out of the Sunshine State Conference, come in at third, fourth and sixth respectively while the Blazers and Rollins College round out the top eight.
The top six teams in the region qualify for the NCAA South Regional as the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Selection Show is scheduled for Nov. 14 and the NCAA South Regional slated for the following week. The NCAA Division II Women's Soccer National Championship round is scheduled for Dec. 9-11, at Switchbacks FC Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo. There will be two more public region rankings scheduled to be released each of the next two Wednesdays prior to the Selection Show.
VSU is looking for its first NCAA postseason appearance since 2014, when the Blazers went 1-1 in the postseason with a 1-0 victory over Christian Brothers and a 1-0 loss to Rollins. The Blazers went to the NCAA regional from 2012-2014.
Following the two matches this weekend in Alabama, the Blazers conclude the regular season on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m., at West Georgia in the Red Clay Rivalry. The Gulf South Conference Championship begins on Sunday, Nov. 7 on campus sites as VSU has a chance to host a first round match depending on the results of the final three regular season matches. The semifinals and championship of the conference tournament are scheduled for Nov. 11-13, at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla.
