VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind season-highs in points (118), field goals made (49) and field goal shooting (.620), the No. 18 Valdosta State men's basketball team won its tenth-straight game Friday afternoon with a 118-83 victory over visiting Shorter.
VSU (17-3, 11-2 GSC) had a season-high seven players in double figures in the game, led by 20 points each from senior
Clay Guillozet and junior
Burke Putnam. Of the ten players who played in the game for VSU, nine scored. The Blazers went 49 of 79 from the field (.620), while they were 8 of 20 from range and 12 of 18 from the line. Guillozet had a team-high nine rebounds in the game as he was 8 of 13 from the field with three triples, Putnam was a VSU career-best 9 of 10 from the field with six assists, no turnovers and three steals.
The 118 points marked the most in the Gulf South Conference this season and the fourth time this season VSU has eclipsed 100 points in a game. The 49 made field goals by the Blazers also marked a season-high in the league this season.
Shorter (3-19, 0-14 GSC) had a game-high 24 points and 18 rebounds from Ja'Cori Wilson as he was 9 of 19 from the field with four triples and 2 of 2 from the line. Wilson had 13 rebounds on the defensive end in the game, leading five Hawks in double figures.
The Blazer "D" held Shorter to just 29 of 82 from the field for a .354 average, while the Hawks were 12 of 39 from range and 13 of 22 from the line. VSU held a 21-17 lead in points off turnovers and got out in transition for an 18-8 lead in fast break points.
Guillozet scored on a layup for a 31-18 lead with ten minutes left in the first half, as the Blazers extended the lead to 17 on a jumper from senior
Bryce Smith for a 41-24 lead with six minutes left in the first half. Shorter used a 15-5 run for a 46-39 ledger with 3:37 left capped on a triple from Jay Shropshire.
The Blazers then closed the half on an 11-2 run for a 57-41 score at the break. Sophomore
Imoras Agee had four big free throws, while Guillozet buried a triple, highlighting the run. At the break, VSU shot .629 from the field on 22 of 35, while going 6 of 12 from range and 7 of 9 from the line. Agee had 13 points, while Guillozet paced the team with 14. Wilson had 16 points in the first half to lead Shorter.
VSU pushed the lead over 20 points in the second half as redshirt freshman
Jakari Gallon buried a triple for a 78-57 lead with 12:43 left as Shorter never got the deficit back under 20 the rest of the way.
