LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 43 Valdosta State men's golf team had a tale of two rounds on Monday on the first day of the 2020 Matlock Collegiate Classic, hosted by Florida Southern on the par 72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Club. The Blazers fired a 312 in the opening round and came back with a 297 in the second round as they sit 12
th heading into Tuesday's final round.
No. 26 Columbus State leads the 15-team field with a 36-hole score of 578 on two rounds of 289. No. 34 Florida Southern is second with a 586 score, holding a one stroke lead over No. 15 Florida Tech. No. 3 West Florida sits fourth with a 591 score, while No. 5 Lynn is fifth at 593.
No. 22 Limestone and No. 19 Rollins are tied for sixth (598), while Georgia College and No. 50 Nova Southeastern are tied for eighth at 599. Montevallo sits tenth (608, followed by No. 12 Saint Leo (609) and the Blazers are 12
th at 612. Palm Beach Atlantic is 13
th at 620, followed by Eckerd (624) and Trevecca Nazarene is 15
th at 626.
Individually, Florida Tech's Max O'Hagan is 9-under for the tournament on rounds of 69 and 66 for a 135 score. Jordan Doull is second at 4-under 140, followed by a tie for third between West Florida's Carlos Marrero and Florida Southern duo of Chris Fosdick and Max Coutsolioutsos at even par 144.
For the Blazers, sophomore
Davis Smith is tied for 13
th with a 148 score on rounds of 75 and 73. Junior
Wesley Hanson is tied for 25
th with a 150 score after carding rounds of 76 and 74. Freshman
Ryan Pollman, competing in his first collegiate tournament, opened with an 83 and dropped nine strokes for a 74 in the second round and a 157 score as he is tied for 63
rd. Senior
Jordan Long also is tied for 63
rd on rounds of 81 and 76, while sophomore
Gage Smith is tied for 75
th with a 163 score. Like Pollman, G. Smith dropped nine strokes in the first two rounds from an 86 to a 77. VSU junior A.J. Ouimet is playing as an individual and is tied for 36
th after carding rounds of 75 and 76 for a 151 score.
