VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's golf team fired a final round 294 to go along with a 279 for a 573 scored and finished tied for fifth at the Kiawah Island Invitational at Osprey Point Tuesday. Lander University fired a final round 275 to win the team title, edging host South Carolina Aiken by three strokes.
Mount Olive and Gulf South Conference member Lee finished tied for third, while VSU, Clayton State and Southern Wesleyan all finished tied for fifth at 573. No. 16 Limestone and No. 20 Rollins tied for eighth at 577, while No. 21 Columbus State was tenth at 579 to round out the top ten for the 18-team tournament.
West Georgia finished with a 580 score, followed by Erskine at 588, Georgia College at 591, Lenoir-Rhyne at 595, while Anderson and Eckerd tied for 15
that 603. Fayetteville State finished 17
that 609 and Chowan was 18
that 634.
Lander duo of Jon Parker and Chris Fortenberry finished first and second, respectively, as Parker fired a 36-hole score of 10-under 134 (66-68) and Fortenberry finished 9-under at 135 (68-67). Eric Shea of Southern Wesleyan and Leonardo Bono finished tied for third at 8-under 136.
For the Blazers sophomore
Davis Smith finished tied for seventh at 139 as he carded rounds of 67 and 72, finishing 5-under. Junior
AJ Ouimet finished tied for 20
thwith a 1-under 143 on rounds of 72 and 71. Senior
Jordan Long finished tied for 25
thwith a 144 score on rounds of 70 and 74. Sophomore
Chase Weathers finished the tournament tied for 37
thwith a 147 score on rounds of 70 and 77, while freshman
Hayden Smith tied for 82
ndwith a 158 score on rounds of 81 and 77.
The Blazers return home to prepare for the Cougar Invitational, Sept. 23-24 at the Country Club of Columbus, hosted by Columbus State University.
