KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Valdosta State men's golf team opened the 2019-2020 season with a strong first round of the Kiawah Island Invitational, Monday at Osprey Point Golf Course. The Blazers sit second heading into Tuesday's final round after carding a blistering 9-under 279 as a team.
Host and No. 19-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken leads the 18-team field with a 12-under 276. The Blazers sit three strokes back and enjoy a three-shot advantage over Lander and Mount Olive at 6-under 282. Clayton State rounds out the top five at 3-under 285.
Southern Wesleyan sits sixth at -under 287, followed by Gulf South Conference members West Georgia (290) and Lee (292). Lenoir-Rhyne and No. 20 Rollins are tied for ninth at 293, followed by Anderson at 294 and there is a three-way tie for 12
thbetween No. 16 Limestone, Erskine and Georgia College at 295. No. 21 Columbus State sits 15
that 297, followed by Fayetteville State (308), Eckerd (313) and Chowan (317).
Individually, Lander's Jon Parker leads the 90-player field, opening with a 66. VSU sophomore
Davis Smith sits second with a career-best 67, while there is seven-way tie for third at 4-under. Smith's previous low round collegiately was at the Aflac/Cougar Invitational last fall (70).
