MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In a pair of shutouts, the Valdosta State baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday at Montevallo as the Blazers won the opener 4-0 and lost the nightcap 1-0 in eight innings on a bases loaded walk. The teams will conclude the series Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
In the opener, VSU (19-17, 8-11 GSC) used a dominant pitching performance from junior
Tristan Cone as he tossed a four-hitter and combined for a shutout with junior
Sean Gabel. Cone (4-0) went 7.1 innings, allowing four hits, walked three and fanned six. Gabel pitched the final 1.2 innings, walking one and fanning two.
VSU did its damage in the seventh inning as it plated four runs in the frame as junior
Jordan Holt reached on an error to begin the frame. Junior
Mike Christopoulos singled to center, moving Holt to third and sophomore
Seth Caballes singled home Holt for a 1-0 lead. Junior
Jowenrick Daantji singled home a run and senior
Josh Broughton doubled home two runs for a 4-0 lead.
The Blazers left the bags full in the eighth as did the Falcons (16-20, 13-10 GSC) in the bottom of the frame with Gabel coming up with a huge strikeout looking to end the threat. Broughton finished the game 2 for 5 with two RBI to lead the Blazers. The win marked the third shutout of the season for VSU and first in league play this season.
In the nightcap, strong pitching dominated again as the teams were scoreless through seven innings. VSU junior
Jonathan Gettys allowed just two hits, walked two and fanned ten through seven innings. In the eighth, VSU got a runner to second, but was unable to score.
In the bottom of the frame, a walk and a strikeout wild pitch put two on for the Falcons with one out. Gettys walked his fourth batter of the game to load the bases, but got a key infield out for the second out. On a 3-1 count, UM drew a walk for the winning run.
Gettys (3-3) took the loss in 7.2 innings, allowing two hits, walked five and fanned a season-high 12. Daantji went 2 for 3 in the game as it marked the first time VSU had been shutout all season (3-1). UM used four pitchers in the game.
