HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Leading 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning the Valdosta State baseball team was unable to hang on as Alabama Huntsville plated six runs for a 10-5 win to sweep the series.
VSU fell to 14-16 overall and 4-10 in Gulf South Conference play, while UAH improved to 17-11 and 8-6 in league play.
VSU had five runs on seven hits with three errors, while the Chargers scored ten runs on ten hits with two miscues. The loss spoiled a great start from junior Tristan Cone as he went 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits, one unearned run, walked two and fanned six as he didn't factor into the decision. Junior Trevin Eubanks allowed three hits and three earned runs in the eighth inning, without recording an out to fall to 0-3 on the year.
Junior Jowenrick Daantji went 2 for 5 with a run scored and one RBI for the Blazers, while senior Andrew Williamson was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI and belted a home run.
Palmer Ford went 2 for 5 for the Chargers with four RBI and Zach Duvall was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Heath Senn (1-1) took the win in the final two innings, fanning two.
Daantji gave VSU a 1-0 lead with a ground out RBI in the first inning, but a fielding error on the Blazers plated the first run of the game for the Chargers in the second.
VSU regained the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from senior DJ King. The game remained 2-1 until the sixth when King scored on a wild pitch and Williamson belted a two run home run for a 5-1 advantage.
In the seventh, a fielder's choice RBI scored one run and Ford belted a single up the middle for two runs and a 5-4 VSU advantage.
The Chargers scored six runs on six hits in the eighth as the frame began with a double to center and a throwing error plated the second run for a 5-5 score. A bases loaded walk gave the Chargers a 6-5 lead and Ford came up big again with another two RBI single for a 9-5 lead as UAH added one more run for a 10-5 lead.
The Blazers return home to host Auburn Montgomery Mar. 30-31 at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
