Blazers Blast Auburn Montgomery 18-2 in Series-Opener

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind a season-high 18 runs, 17 RBI and 17 hits, the Valdosta State baseball team returned home in a big way with an 18-2 victory over Visiting Auburn Montgomery Friday evening at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

VSU (15-16, 5-10 GSC) snapped a three-game skid, scoring eight runs in the first two innings and scored in all six of its batting innings for the first time all season in the run-rule win.  The Blazers scored 18 runs on 17 hits as six different Blazers had multi-hit games and junior Logan Stephens and sophomore Seth Caballes each had three hits to lead the team.

Blazer junior hurler Tristan Cone was dominant on the mound as he improved to 3-0 on the year, going all seven innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walked two and fanned seven.  He threw 105 pitches for the game with 68 strikes.

VSU got things started in the first inning as senior DJ King plated two runs on a RBI single with the bases loaded and nobody out.  King finished the game 2 of 5 with two runs scored and four RBI, while belting his first home run of the season.  Stephens plated the third run of the frame and senior Andrew Williamson singled home the final run of the inning for a 4-0 lead.  He finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Caballes was 3 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Followed by a run from the Warhawks in the top of the second, VSU added four more runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by King's round-tripper for two runs to left and the Blazers added a single run in the third with a RBI single to right from junior Jowenrick Daantji and a 9-1 lead.

Two runs highlighted the fourth and five were scored by the Blazers in the fifth as the previous high for the season was 13 runs back in February against Kentucky Wesleyan in a 13-3 win.

AUM (16-15, 7-9 GSC) used eight pitchers in the game and struggled on the mound as all eight pitchers gave up runs, while the Warhawks walked 13 batters in the game.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m.  Check back with vstateblazers.com for links to live stats, streaming, ticket information and more.
