VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams took the road in three Gulf South Conference matches this weekend. VSU came out victorious in all three matches on each side.
The No. 14-ranked Blazer men's tennis team opened the weekend with a 7-0 win at Shorter, followed by a 6-1 win at Alabama Huntsville and a 5-2 win at Lee. The Blazers now are 5-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play and have won five-straight matches after starting the season facing four ranked teams in their first four matches (1-3).
Against Shorter, VSU made quick work of the Hawks, winning the first two doubles matches by the combined game score of 12-1. In singles, junior
Jordi Mas put VSU up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the top spot, while junior
Yohan Nguyen won at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1 and the Blazers clinched the match at No. 2 as freshman Florian SImbozel won 6-4, 6-1.
At UAH, the Blazers won the doubles point, once again, this time at No. 2 and No. 3, as Mas/Simbozel won 6-4 at No. 2 and junior

Robert Cizek won at No. 3, 6-3. In singles, both Nguyen, at No. 3, and Pineda, at No. 4, needed three sets for victories as VSU won 6-1.
Sunday at Lee, VSU again win the doubles point at Nos. 2-3, both by the margin of 6-3. In singles, Nguyen won at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2, for a 2-0 lead and Mas put the Blazers up 3-0 with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1, while SImbozel clinched the match at No. 2, with a 7-5, 7-6 win. Lee won at Nos. 5 and 6 for a 5-2 VSU victory.
On the women's side, the Blazers got their first win of the season on Friday versus Shorter, 7-0, not dropping a set in the match. On Saturday, the red and black won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 as the tandem of sophomore

Eva Rivoal won at No. 2, 6-3 and, at No. 3, freshman duo of

Rachel Chan-Yaneff blanked their opposition, 6-0. In singles against the Chargers, VSU won four of six matches, all in straight-sets for the win, 5-2.
On Sunday, the VSU women's team had its hands full with Lee as the match came down to the final moments as Brynjarsdottir battled back from a 6-4 loss in the first set at No. 5, for a 6-4 win in the third set. She was down 4-1 and rattled off five straight games for the win to clinch the match 4-3. Lee won the doubles point, but the Blazers took a 2-1 lead with singles wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Lee won at No. 3, but Rivoal used a three-set win at No. 4 for a 3-2 lead. The Flames then evened match at three with a win at No. 6, prior to Brynjarsdottir's heroics.
The women's team improved to 3-8 on the year and 3-0 in league play as the teams return home to host Montevallo on Tues., March 26 at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
