Blazer Women’s Tennis Falls 5-2 Versus Montevallo

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team put up a great fight Tuesday in a 5-2 loss to Montevallo at the VSU Tennis Courts.  VSU had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss, falling to 3-9 overall and 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Montevallo improved to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in GSC play.

UM won all three doubles matches, but Blazer duo of Estee Widdershoven and Daniella Barta gave No. 21 Maria Garcia/Dorotea Hanzek all they could handle as the match went to a tiebreaker with the visitors winning 7-3.  At No. 3 doubles, Birte Langestein and Rachel Chan-Yaneff fought valiantly in a tiebreaker loss with Rayne Sinclair and Amanda Gautreaux winning 7-6 with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker for a 1-0 lead.

VSU tied the match at two with wins from Langestein at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1) and Widdershoven at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4. Gautreaux won at No. 4 over VSU's Eva Rivoal in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-1) for a 3-2 lead and the Falcons won at No. 5 as Whitney Hamilton downed Hera Brynjarsdottir, 6-4, 6-2 to win the match.

The Blazers continue at home this week as they entertain No. 14 West Alabama on Saturday at 9 a.m. and No. 27 West Florida Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
