Guillozet and Davis Named Steel’s Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State standout men's basketball senior Clay Guillozet and junior long snapper Pippin Davis were named the Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week.  This is the first honor of the season for both Guillozet and Davis.

Guillozet, a native of Greenville, Ohio, was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week after he went 9 of 11 from the field and a perfect 7 of 7 from the line with eight rebounds, five assists and one steal in 40 minutes of basketball last Sunday in an 84-62 upset victory over No. 6-ranked Alabama Huntsville.  He led four Blazer starters in double figures.  It marked his third game this season of over 20 points and third of nine made field goals or more.  It also was his first game of being perfect at the charity stripe this season in five or more attempts.

For the season, Guillozet is averaging 18.1 points per game for the season on 72 of 127 from the field (.567). He is 28 of 40 from the line (.700) and is second in rebounding at 8.1 per game.  Guillozet has 43 assists to lead the team and 14 steals for second on the team.  Guillozet is closing in on 1,000 career points at VSU as he has 977 points in 72 games played, while he has 477 rebounds for his VSU career.  Guillozet transferred to VSU from West Liberty following his freshman season.

Davis, a native of Barnesville, Ga., was named to the Academic All-America® Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Division II Academic All-America® program.  He was the only student-athlete named to any of the Academic All-America® teams, as announced by CoSIDA from the Gulf South Conference.

Davis has a 3.67 grade point average in Middle Grades Education.  He played in all 11 games this season for the Blazers handling the long snapping duties for the Gulf South Conference champion Blazers.

He is the 17th different Blazer to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in school history and the fifth in football.  Former Blazer football standout Chris Hatcher earned first team honors in 1993 and 1994, while Dusty Bonner was a second team selection in 2001.  Will Rhody earned second team honors in 2004 and Jake Thomas garnered second team accolades in 2012.

Davis and the 2019 Blazers went 10-1 this season, winning the program's eighth conference title and back-to-back league championships.  The Blazers, who won the program's fourth national title in 2018, were ranked No. 1 nationally the entire regular season, before falling 38-35 in the NCAA Second Round to West Florida on Nov. 30.

He has been the starting long snapper for two seasons for the Blazers and has helped lead the team to a 24-1 record during the last two seasons.  Davis was a member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll in 2018.
