SEASIDE, Calif. – The Valdosta State men's golf team fired a final round 300 and moved up two spots to finish tied for eighth at the 2019 Otter Invitational Tuesday, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay. Top-ranked Barry won the tournament by 14 strokes with a 54-hole score of 865. Valdosta State junior
AJ Ouimet finished tied for tenth in the tournament with a 219 score.
Cal State San Marcos and Cal State Monterey Bay finished tied for second, each with an 879 score, while Cal State East Bay was fourth at 886. No. 22-ranked Stanislaus State was fifth at 891. UC-Colorado Springs and No. 11 Colorado School of Mines tied for sixth at 892, followed by a tie between VSU, ranked 34
th in the latest Golfstat rankings, and No. 27-ranked Sonoma State at 898. No. 43 Western Washington rounded out the top ten at 903.
Coming in at 11
th was No. 30 Chico State (905), followed by No. 19 Florida Southern (906). Holy Names (917), Cal State San Bernardino (934), Northwest Nazarene (935) and the Cal State Monterey Bay "B" Team finished 16
th at 953.
Ouimet opened with a 75 and followed with a 70 yesterday and carded a 74 today to move up two spots to tie for tenth with Ryan Bisharat of Cal State San Marcos. Stanislaus State's Brad Sparrer won the tournament with a 6-under 210 on rounds of 70, 69 and 71. Barry's Felipe Alvarez finished second at 3-under 213, while Western Washington's Ethan Casto and Cal State Monterey Bay's Elis Svard finished tied for third at 2-under 214.
Following Ouimet for the Blazers was junior
Wesley Hanson, who carded a 71 Tuesday, to finish tied for 25
th with a 224 score on rounds of 75 and 78 Monday. Senior
Jordan Long tied for 34
th with a 226 score on rounds of 76, 73 and 77, while sophomore
Chase Weathers fired a 229 score and tied for 43
rd (76-75-78). Sophomore
Davis Smith tied for 69
thwith a 237 score on rounds of 76, 79 and 82.
The tournament concludes the fall season for the Blazers as the team will begin again in the spring with the Matlock Collegiate at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla., Feb. 10-11, 2020.
