VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team opens the 2018 Gulf South Conference slate Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at The Complex versus Shorter University.

The Blazers are coming off a 1-3 weekend at the Converse Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. There, VSU defeated the host Valkyries 3-0 for its third-straight sweep to that point, including a victory over Coastal Georgia earlier in the week. The Blazers then dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Limestone as VSU battled back from a 2-1 deficit to force the pivotal set. Last Saturday, VSU dropped a 3-1 decision to North Greenville and ended the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Mars Hill.

Chloe' Chubilleau was named to the All-Tournament Team as she hit .271 for the tournament to lead the team, while recording a team-high 52 kills in 133 swings with eight aces. She had 33 digs and three total blocks with one solo block.
For the season, the Blazers are 4-8 overall and are hitting .155 for the season with 461 kills in 1459 swings. The team is averaging 10.4 kills per set, while recording 91 aces to rank third nationally and first in the GSC. VSU is 29
thnationally in aces per set at 2.07, ranking fourth in the conference. The Blazers are fourth in the league in blocks with 63.
The Blazers are averaging 10.1 assists per set (445 assists) and has 633 digs on the year for a 14.39 average in digs per set. VSU is fourth in the league in both assists and digs, while ranking sixth in kills.
Individually, Chubilleau leads the team with 125 kills as she is sixth in the league. Chubilleau is averaging 2.84 kills per set, while recording 365 attacks and has a .167 percentage. She has a team-high 19 aces as she is 27
thnationally and second in the league.
Sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez leads the team in assists with 394 as she is hitting .246 for the season with 24 kills in 61 swings. She has 13 aces, tying for second on the team with freshman
Aurora Nero. Reyes-Perez ranks second in the conference in assists per set at 8.95 and her 394 assists leads the league, ranking 36
thnationally.
Junior
Kayla Widera leads the team with 40 total blocks and 12 solo blocks as she is seventh in the conference in blocks per set (0.91) and fourth in total blocks with 40, ranking 48
thnationally. Widera is hitting .138 for the season, while recording 68 kills with 12 aces, and 26 digs.
Nero leads the team with 167 digs, ranking third in the GSC, while freshman
Jessie Mooney is second on the team in attack percentage. She has 93 kills for second on the team, while recording 11 aces and eight total blocks. She was named GSC Freshman of the Week earlier this season.
The Blazers are under the direction of first year head coach
Kaleigh Zoucha, while Shorter University also is under a first-year head coach in Zach Roschi.
The Hawks are 3-4 on the year and also competed in the Converse Tournament last weekend. Shorter defeated Limestone 3-2 and Converse (3-0) and lost to North Greenville in five sets. As a team, the Hawks have 284 kills on the year with 267 assists, 30 aces and are hitting .122 for the season. They have 442 digs with 68 blocks and 10 solo blocks.
Individually Paris Buckner leads the team with 34 kills, while Tinsley Fain leads the team with 76 assists and Sofia Stephens has five aces. Emily Wilson has 87 digs to lead the team, while Buckner also leads with 11 blocks.
Following the match, VSU returns to the road as it is gone for the next two weekends for conference play, before returning home for five straight matches to end September and open October. This weekend, VSU travels to Lee (Tenn.) and West Georgia for a Friday match at 7 p.m. and a Saturday match at 1 p.m., respectively.
