Box Score 2 PENSACOLA, Fla.–The Valdosta State baseball team used a balanced effort in game one of Saturday's doubleheader to roll to a 10-1 victory over West Florida, before falling in game two of the Gulf South Conference showdown in Pensacola, Fla., 15-5.
In the opener, Blazer starter Hunter Jones delivered one of his most impressive outings of the season against the Argonauts, who will enter next week's GSC Tournament as the No. 3 seed. Jones held UWF to just three hits over six innings of work and allowed just one run.
During that same stretch, the VSU offense gave Jones eight runs of support, with multiple runs scored in the second, third, and fourth innings. The offensive surge was highlighted by a four-run fourth, which included three singles, a double by Dalton Murray, and a fielding error by the Argonauts.
The runs put VSU in front 8-0 in the early going, and two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings helped negate a two-run bottom of the ninth by the Argonauts for the 10-3 victory.
In game one, the Blazers recorded 15 hits. Along with a 4-for-5 outing by Murray, Aaron Haughton complemented the effort with two hits, a double, and three RBI's. In addition, Andrew Williamson offered two hits, including a homer in the ninth.
Jones picked up the win to improve to 4-3 on the year, while the Blazers roughed up Tony Kucera to drop his season stint to 6-3.
Game two took a turn in West Florida's favor, as the Argonauts tallied 11 hits for 15 runs in the seven-inning affair. Meanwhile, the Blazers were able to rack up nine hits, but fell short with just five runs in the game.
Blazer leadoff hitter Kendall Herron went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in game two, but UWF left fielder Matt Sullivan fueled the Argonaut offense with four hits, including one home run and four RBI's.
Cooper Cain was forced to exit the game early and suffered the loss to fall to 4-5 on the year, while UWF's Jared Gonzalez notched the win for the Argonauts to improve to 3-1 after three innings of relief midway through the game.
The Blazers and the Argonauts will conclude their regular season schedules with the series finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. EST in Pensacola, Fla.
