CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Blazers of Valdosta State softball saw their five-game winning streak come to an end at the start of the day, but the team bounced back in game two to finish with a doubleheader split (3-6, 5-3) against the rival Wolves of West Georgia on Friday in Carrollton, Ga. at University Field.
The Blazers (32-9, 18-7 GSC) plated three runs in the first game of the day, two of which came on a two-run shot to right field by Taylor Hartenbach in the fifth.
The difference in the game, however, came in the third, when the Wolves (22-21, 9-17 GSC) turned three hits into six runs. Cassie Henderson started things off with a walk, and UWG followed with back-to-back bunts, one for a hit and one for a sacrifice. After Madison Chambers was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Peyton Stallworth chopped a grounder to second. Valdosta State second baseman Danielle Patterson scooped it up and went to the plate, but the home plate umpire ruled the runner safe. The Wolves took full advantage of the opportunity, and Mallory Walker slapped a two-run single, before Lexie Stohr snuck a homer inside the right field foul pole to break open a five-run lead for West Georgia.
Although the Blazers were unable to recover in game one, the VSU offense came alive in game two with 10 hits for five runs. Valdosta State produced a big inning of their own in the top of the fifth, when Brandy Morgan crushed a moon shot over the left field wall. Two batters later, Cassey Cornelius followed with a solo shot of her own to put the Blazers on top 5-0.
The Wolves chipped away in the closing innings with two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth, but Kathryn Carter pitched around trouble in relief to help Kameron Coggins score the win and move to 3-1 on the season. The save for Carter marked her second of the year.
Valdosta State will try and take the series tomorrow at noon in the series finale at University Field in Carrollton, Ga.
