FINAL RESULTS
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 5 ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking loss to the No. 10 Embry Riddle Eagles in regional action on Friday afternoon at The VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
The loss represented the first of the season for Valdosta State and set the Blazers back to 2-1 overall, while the Eagles improved to 3-2 on the young season.
Valdosta State got off to a favorable start in doubles play with an 8-5 win for
Leo Blay and
Xavier Pineda over Juan Ortiz Couder and Mickael Faucher at No. 2, followed by another 8-5 victory for
Fernando Rivas and
Jordi Mas over Rodolfo Arreygue and Luke de Caires at No. 3. The two wins scored VSU a 2-1 lead after doubles, despite an 8-4 loss at No. 1 for
Eden Peleg and
Axel Holm to Carlos Becke and Deepak Vishavkarma.
The match took a turn for the worse in singles play, as the Eagles took wins on courts 2, 5, and 6 to counter VSU's wins at No. 4 and No. 3 and force a 4-4 tie. Becke defeated Rivas, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, Donayre defeated Peleg at No. 5, and Cuellar defeated
Davis Stewart 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Pineda took down Vishavkarma 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Mas scored a 6-5, 7-5 win over Arreygue at No. 4.
With the match resting on the results at No. 1, Couder took down Blay in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to seal the match and give the Eagles the win.
The Blazers return to action against Florida Southern at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in Valdosta, Ga.
