VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team let one slip away on Saturday afternoon, as the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws used a fourth quarter comeback for a 65-63 win in Gulf South Conference action at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
The Lady Blazers took their first lead of the game with a layup by
Madi Mitchell at the 6:31 mark in the first quarter, and the team built on that lead with 20 more points throughout the remainder of the first quarter. As a result, Valdosta State held a commanding lead at 27-15 heading into the second period.
Valdosta State retained their lead throughout the next two quarters, but a 20 percent (4-of-20) shooting performance in the final quarter led to the Lady Blazers' demise. Mississippi College took full advantage of the opportunity and reclaimed a lead early in the fourth with a jumper by Ashley Minor, which put the Lady Choctaws on top 55-54. Despite the offensive drought, the Lady Blazers were able to stay close, and a quick five-point strike by
Aaliyah Cheatham and
Jazmyn McIntosh even put VSU back in front by one point. The Lady Choctaws would not be denied, however, and outscored the red and black 5-2 in the final minute to secure the win.
The loss snapped a two-game streak for Valdosta State and dropped the Blazers to 10-7 overall, 7-4 in conference play. Mississippi College improved to 9-6 overall and 6-5 against GSC opponents.
Kelley Allen fueled MC with a game-high 22 points, while Mitchell led the way for Valdosta State with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field.
Sonya Franklin added 14 points, and
Kenya Samone' Dixon nearly missed a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Valdosta State gets a short break on Sunday before returning right back to it on Monday night against West Florida at 6:00 p.m.
