PENSACOLA, Fla. - A thrilling matchup between two of the nation's best ended in favor of West Florida by a narrow margin, as the No. 4 ranked Argonauts outlasted the No. 8 ranked Valdosta State Blazers in Gulf South Conference men's tennis action on Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
Alex Peyrot and Kenny Brasil teamed up as the nation's No. 3 ranked doubles contingent to defeat
Gereon Heitmann and
Niklas Herbring 8-4 at No. 1, before Juan Pablo and Pedro Roese knocked off
Xavier Pineda and
Leo Blay, 8-5, at No. 2. In the third doubles match, Pablo Tellez and Pablo Borrero took down VSU's
Jordi Mas and
Fernando Rivas.
The Blazers (7-4, 3-1 GSC) came roaring back in singles action, beginning with No. 8 ranked Blay, who defeated No. 7 Peyrot 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 1 position of the day's singles lineup.
Heitmann kept it going at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 36 ranked Juan Pablo Boada, but UWF's Brasil defeated Rivas, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Mas fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4.
The two singles wins gave the Argonauts (12-3, 6-0 GSC) the points they needed to take the match, despite Valdosta State's
Niklas Herbring picking up a 7-6, 6-0 win over Roese at No. 5 and Pineda's 6-2, 6-2 win over Douglas Boe at No. 6.
The Blazers have a chance to get back on track on Saturday, after a quick turnaround will pit Head Coach
John Hansen's squad against Concordia for a 10:00 a.m. neutral matchup in Pensacola, Fla.
