West Florida Denies Lady Blazer Comeback; VSU Falls 62-55

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team concluded their 2015-16 season with a 62-55 loss to the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday afternoon at the UWF Fieldhouse in Pensacola, Fla.

The Lady Blazers raced out of the gate with a 16-7 start in the opening quarter, but the Argonauts took advantage of a second quarter scoring drought by the Lady Blazers. VSU was held scoreless until the 3:35 mark, when Jo Bistrow connected from long range to stop an 8-0 UWF run. Bistrow's three ball sparked an 8-5 run over the final three minutes of the first half, which allowed the Blazers to take a 24-21 advantage to halftime.

The second half belonged to the Argonauts, as UWF forward Toni Brewer scored 12 points to fuel a third quarter in which the Lady Blazers were outscored 22-10. Brewer finished the game with 19 points in the second half alone, en route to a team-high 27 points.

Valdosta State trailed by as many as 14 points at 52-38 midway through the final quarter, but closed that gap to 58-53 with a 15-6 run. The run ended at the 0:23 mark, however, when Valdosta State was forced to foul in order to stop the clock. The Argonauts made their free throws down the stretch to hold off VSU and secure the victory.

Senior Maggie Davis closed out her career as the only Lady Blazer to reach double digit scoring figures on a 5-of-9 shooting effor from the field. Nine different VSU players scored in the contest, but West Florida countered the attack with 17 points scored off of turnovers and a rebounding effort that topped Valdosta State 43-29.

With the win, UWF secured the No. 4 position in the GSC standings with a 17-9, 15-7 GSC record and earned the right to host a quarterfinal in Pensacola, Fla. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, VSU's season came to an end at 11-17 overall and 7-15 in GSC play.
