Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball program extended their streak to three at the Lynn Invitational on Saturday with a 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-19, 25-20) win over Barry, followed by a thrilling 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 15-25, 15-12) win over Lynn in the nightcap.
With the victory, the Blazers improved to 3-0 on the young season, while Barry fell to 2-1. Lynn's loss also marked their first of the season and moved the Fighting Knights to a 2-1 record on the year.
In the first match of the day,
Susanna Peonia picked up where she left off on Friday night with another impressive blocking effort. The junior transfer posted seven blocks in the contest and offered plenty of assistance on the attack with eight kills.
Senior
Lea Jaklen posted a double-double with a team high 10 kills and 11 digs, while
Jessica Codato dished out 32 assists and picked up 14 digs for her second straight double-double effort.
The Blazers took the first set with relative ease, outscoring the Buccaneers 25-18. Barry bounced back in the second frame with a 25-17 victory, but Valdosta State regained their composure to claim a 25-19 win in set three and a deciding 25-10 win in the fourth and final set.
Natalia Campos collected 15 digs in the match to lead the defense, while
Ashley Miller and
Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez assisted Peonia at the net with three blocks each.
In the second match against the hosting Fighting Knights of Lynn, the Blazers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after the first two sets, but Lynn rebounded to claim the third and fourth frames with 25-21, 25-15 victories.
In the deciding set, the Blazers regrouped and spread out the offensive strategy to take an early 7-5 lead with kills from Jaklen, Miller, and Rodriguez-Sanchez. Lynn fought back, however, and took advantage of two Blazer attack errors and a kill from Lydia West to reclaim an 8-7 advantage. West committed an error and swung for a kill to move the score to 9-8, before Peonia connected for a kill and the Blazers used a poor set by LU setter Jayden Davila to overtake the Fighting Knights 10-9. VSU proceeded to outscore the Fighting Knights 4-2 to make the score 14-12, before Jaklen blistered a kill to give the Blazers the 15-12 win.
In the final match, Codato claimed yet another double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs, while Rodriguez-Sanchez came up big on offense with a team-high 16 kills. As a team, the Blazers defensive effort in the final match of the day accounted for 63 digs.
