MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State men's tennis team put together a 5-0 rout of the West Alabama Tigers in their final Gulf South Conference matchup of the regular season on Thursday in Montgomery, Ala.
The Blazers scored a huge burst of momentum heading into the GSC Tournament with the win and improved to 13-6 and 8-1 in conference play on the year while locking up the No. 2 position in the conference. Meanwhile, the Tigers fell to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in league competition with the loss. The Tigers earned a No. 4 seed heading into the postseason.
Valdosta State rolled from the outset with three straight wins, starting with an 8-5 win for
Gereon Heitmann and
Ramon Weil at No. 1 doubles over Adam Drysdale and Manuel Grossmann.
Francisco Yim Kim and
Edward Nguyen cruised to an 8-2 victory against Andrii Stratilenko and Prabh Bal at No. 2.
VSU moved out to a 3-0 lead after a third position win by
Andrew Harvin and
Joachim Schemm, who edged out Caspar Schuetze and Nicolai Jochamowitz 9-7.
Heitmann pushed the Blazers further in front in singles action with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Stratilenko at No. 2, and Nguyen secured the win for Valdosta State, as he defeated Grossmann 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
The Blazers continue play in Montgomery, Ala. tomorrow and will compete in the first round of the GSC Tournament against the No. 7 Shorter Hawks. The match is slated for a 2:30 p.m. EST start at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.
