SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 4 Armstrong Atlantic Pirates defeated the No. 10 Valdosta State Blazers 9-0 in NCAA men's tennis action on Friday at Bacon Park in Savannah, Ga.
The match result dropped Valdosta State to 12-6 overall on the season, while the Pirates improved their record to 17-4.
Fernando Bogajo, the nation's fifth-ranked singles player, outlasted
Francisco Yim Kim 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, before
Gereon Heitmann fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.
Armstrong piled on in singles action at No. 3 with a narrow 7-6, 6-2 win over
Edward Nguyen, and Jan Porteset followed suit at No. 4 to defeat
Ramon Weil 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
The Pirates extended their lead to 9-0 and closed out the day after wins for Ignacio Hernandez and Marek Pesicka, who defeated
Joachim Schemm and
Andrew Harvin 6-2, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-0, respectively.
The sweep for Armstrong began with an 8-3 win for Bogajo and Porteset over Herbring and Nguyen at No. 1, followed by an 8-5 victory for the Pirates' eighteenth ranked team of Hernandez and Pablo Gor, who upset VSU's No. 13 team of Heitmann and Weil. The match at No. 3 ended in favor of Pesicka and Damian Okrutny, who edged out Schemm and Yim Kim 8-5.
Valdosta State returns to Gulf South Conference action on Sunday afternoon in Valdosta, Ga., with a 12:00 noon matchup against the rival Tigers of West Alabama.
