Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Blazers Fall to Delta State, 48-38

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team posted a strong defensive effort at The Complex, but Delta State held the Lady Blazers to their lowest shooting percentage of the season to win the Gulf South Conference matchup 48-38 in Valdosta, Ga.

With the loss, Valdosta State fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the No. 22 Lady Statesmen remained undefeated at 8-0 overall and improved to 5-0 against Gulf South Conference opponents.

The Lady Blazers turned the ball over just 12 times over 40 minutes of action, but struggled to connect from the field. The Lady Statesmen defense, who currently tops the GSC with just 48.0 points allowed per game, allowed just 14 field goals for Valdosta State on 49 attempts. The 28.6 shooting percentage for VSU on the night marked the first time this season that the Lady Blazers had been held to under 30.0 percent from the floor.

Delta State opened up the scoring within the first two minutes of the game on a pair of free throws by Chelsea Rhodes, who went on to lead the Lady Statesmen offensively with 13 total points. Valdosta State returned fire and used layups by Sunshine Walton and Imari Simpson to reclaim a 4-2 advantage. The Lady Blazers held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the first quarter and opened up an 8-5 advantage on an early second quarter reverse layup from senior Maggie Davis. DSU outscored the Lady Blazers, however, 12-6 from that moment on to close out the half with a 14-17 lead.

The deciding run for Delta State came in the third quarter, when the Lady Statesmen posted 18 points against VSU's 10, which gave DSU an 11 point, 35-44 advantage after three quarters of play. The stretch was the start of a 57.1 percent shooting effort in the second half for Delta State that helped the team ultimately outlast the Lady Blazers.

Valdosta State held the Lady Statesmen to only five first half field goals and a 23.8 shooting percentage in the first and second quarters combined, but a 10-of-11 performance from the free throw line and 35 rebounds in the game helped DSU keep the contest in check until the shots began to fall in the second half.

DSU center Becca Ruckes provided offensive support for Rhodes with 10 points on the night. As for the Lady Blazers, Lydia Harvey led Valdosta State with three shots from beyond the arc, which resulted in a team-high nine points in the contest.

Valdosta State returns to action at home on Saturday with another GSC showdown against the Lady Choctaws of Mississippi College. Tip time is slated for 2:00 p.m., with full coverage available at www.vstateblazers.com.
