VALDOSTA, Ga. - After having enjoyed nearly an entire month of home games in October, the Valdosta State soccer team must now hit the road one last time to wrap up the regular season this weekend against West Florida on Friday and the Tigers of West Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
The Blazers enter the weekend holding a tenth place spot in the South Region, as the club was docked three positions in the most recent rankings release despite having not lost a contest since October 10. However, the two upcoming matches are a great opportunity for Head Coach
Rebecca Nolin's squad to regain some ground, since both contests will be against regionally ranked teams. UWF and UWA jumped to No. 7 and No. 5, respectively, while North Alabama, who Valdosta State defeated 1-0 earlier in the season, picked up two spots to move to No. 3 in the South Region.
A glance at the Gulf South Conference standings gives another indication of the importance of the weekend for Valdosta State. The Blazers represent one of the league's top teams and control their own fate as the regular season reaches its conclusion. Although the task is a tall one, particularly on the road, a pair of victories this weekend would push VSU's point total to 31 in the conference and guarantee the team a first place seeding heading into the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Lee Flames currently reign as the GSC's number one team, but the program only has one remaining conference game and is not eligible for postseason play until the 2015 season.
Friday night's match against the Argonauts will kick off at 6:00 p.m. EST, while Sunday's season finale gets underway at 2:00 p.m. EST time.
