CLEVELAND, Miss. – Valdosta State outshot Delta State 13-12 but could not find the equalizer Sunday, as the Lady Statesmen claimed a 1-0 win in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals at Delta Field to end the Blazers' season.
Delta State held an 8-5 shot edge in the first half. VSU flipped that after the break, outshooting the Lady Statesmen 8-4 in the second half and earning three of its five corners.
Delta State scored the match winner in the 70th minute when Caroline Chandler lofted a through ball that took a fortunate hop for the hosts over everyone and into the net. The Blazers pressed late with two corners and shots from Jenni McIntosh and Natalie Ocampo, but Ocampo's final attempt in the 90th minute went wide right.
Sarah Hudson and McIntosh led the attack with four shots apiece, each putting two on target. Alannah Zander went the full 90 minutes in goal for VSU and made six saves.
Valdosta State finishes the season 6-7-3 overall and 5-3-2 in GSC play. The Blazers went 5-0-3 at home, marking the first unbeaten home season in program history.
