VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State Blazers held off a late Delta State rally to open up conference play on Saturday at VSU Soccer Complex.
The Blazers got on the board first in the first minute as Kayleigh Hearns made a cross through heavy traffic to
Sarah Hudson for a goal.
Later, the Lady Statesman hit an equalizer in the 17
th minute. However, just four minutes later, Hudson sent a pass over to
Anna Dandeneau who hit a beautiful rainbow shot from just outside the box to put Valdosta State ahead in the 21
st minute.
Then in the 25
th minute, the Blazer attack found its mark again as
Kaitlyn Scherer sent one over to
Jenni McIntosh who centered up her shot and hit a strike to increase the lead to two.
From there, the scoring slowed as Valdosta State went into the half with a 3-1 lead.
Coming out of the locker room, Delta State responded with a goal in the 50
th minute to cut the lead to one. But stellar defense from the Blazers kept the Lady Statesman from equalizing, with their best look coming in the 70
th minute, where Adirenne Cardona-Colon made the save.
Valdosta State went on to win 3-2, picking their first conference win of the season.
Both teams finished with 20 shots, eight saves and eight corners respectively, with the Blazers holding the edge in shots on target with 11.
Next, Valdosta State will travel to Clinton, Mississippi for another conference matchup with Mississippi Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 2:00p.m.
