Valdosta, Ga - Valdosta State returns home this weekend for a key Gulf South Conference series against Christian Brothers, with a doubleheader set for Saturday, April 18 at 12 p.m. ET and the series finale scheduled for Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. ET.
The Blazers (19-21, 11-13 GSC) enter the weekend following a hard-fought road series at Lee, where they showed resilience despite a challenging start. Valdosta State dropped the series opener 5-3 on Friday but bounced back with a 4-2 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader before falling in a narrow 4-3 walk-off loss in the finale.
In Friday's opener, the Blazers dug themselves into an early deficit as Lee used four home runs to build a 4-0 lead through three innings. Valdosta State responded late, highlighted by a pinch-hit home run from
Evie Pitts and a strong performance from
Saylor McNearney, who went 2-for-2 with two walks and a double. The Blazers continued to chip away, adding another run in the seventh on an RBI single from
Charlotte Phillips, but ultimately came up short.
Saturday's doubleheader showcased Valdosta State's ability to respond under pressure. In game one, the Blazers erased an early 2-0 deficit behind timely hitting and strong pitching from
Alyssa Vallad.
Rachael Lee delivered a clutch two-run double to tie the game, and late offense from
Chloe Eichelberger and
Madison VanAllen helped secure a 4-2 win. Vallad was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just two runs.
The series finale proved to be another tightly contested battle. After four scoreless innings, Valdosta State broke through in the fifth when Eichelberger launched a three-run home run to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead. However, Lee responded with a pair of late runs, including a game-tying home run in the sixth and a walk-off single in the seventh to hand the Blazers a tough 4-3 loss.
Despite the series result, Valdosta State showed encouraging signs offensively. McNearney continued to set the tone at the top of the lineup, while Eichelberger provided power in key moments. Contributions from Phillips, Bogart, and Lee added depth, and the pitching staff, led by Vallad and
Savannah Barfield, delivered competitive outings throughout the weekend.
Christian Brothers enters the series coming off a split in its most recent doubleheader, showcasing both offensive firepower and areas of inconsistency. The Buccaneers produced a strong 7-run, 12-hit performance in game one, led by Marin Beeson's 3-for-4 outing and Ashley Williamson's three RBIs. Kate Candies and Mackenzie Gieseler also contributed to a balanced offensive attack, while Emily Schooler earned the win with a complete-game performance.
In game two, Christian Brothers jumped out early with two runs in the first inning and added two more in the fifth but struggled to sustain momentum late. Beeson remained productive, while Candies and Katelyn Harmon each drove in runs. However, defensive miscues and limited late offense proved costly despite a complete-game effort from Vivian Watts.
As Valdosta State returns home, the focus will be on building off the competitive performances against Lee while tightening execution in key moments. With both teams capable of producing offensively, the weekend series sets up as an important opportunity for the Blazers to gain ground in the GSC standings and protect home field.
