PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 17 Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 4 West Alabama Saturday in a neutral site, Gulf South Conference match in Pensacola, Fla.
The Blazers fell to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in GSC play and will battle Christian Brothers on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET to complete the league portion of the season. VSU then will return home to host both Lynn and Tampa next week to close out the regular season, facing Lynn on Friday at 2 p.m. and Tampa on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
Against West Alabama, the Tigers took the early lead with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Blazer No. 3 duo of
Carmelle Vial and
Kitti Nemeth hung tough with Nanoka Kaczma and Greta Zawles, falling 7-5, while No. 4-ranked duo of Shaira Riviera and Alexa Milliam won at the top spot over No. 38
Lena Beckx and
Milica Prokic, 6-3.
In singles, Prokic battled back from a 6-2 loss in the first set at No. 2 against Milliam, ranked No. 11 nationally, winning the second set 6-2 and losing the third 6-4. Vial, at No. 5, won the first set against Jenaila Pruilla, ranked No. 69, 6-4, dropped the second set 7-5 and lost in the super tiebreaker, 10-5.
