SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 17 Valdosta State women's tennis team posted a 4-2 win at No. 47 Saint Leo on Sunday afternoon as it improved to 8-4 on the year, while SLU fell to 5-11.
The Blazers continued their strong start in doubles play winning at Nos. 2 and 3 for the early lead. No. 3 doubles duo of
Kitti Nemeth and
Carmelle Vial, blanked Madelyn Martin and Catherine Rabatin, 6-0, while
Ivana Castillo Hurtado and
Charleigh Fay won 6-1 over Sophia Johnson and Nicol Novak.
Castillo Hurtado, ranked No. 53 nationally, won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for a 2-0 lead, but SLU's top singles player Ozel Deren won 6-2, 6-3 over
Lena Beckx, for a 2-1 score. Fay won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles putting VSU up 3-1, but the Lions used a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win from Camila Keller over
Milica Prokic at No. 2 singles for a 3-2 deficit. Nemeth won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 over Allie Fernadini 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match.
The Blazers head to Pensacola, Fla., on Apr. 3 to face Mississippi College at 11 a.m. ET.
