VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 17 Valdosta State women's tennis team returned home for a 5-2, Gulf South Conference victory over Auburn Montgomery, Friday afternoon. The Blazers improved to 7-4 on the year and 4-0 in league play.
The Blazers came away winning the doubles point in come-from-behind fashion for the ninth time this season in 11 matches and improved to 7-2 when winning the doubles point. AUM top duo of Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa won 6-1 over No. 48
Lena Beckx and
Milica Prokic. VSU then leveled the doubles as
Kitti Nemeth and
Carmelle Vial won at No. 3 6-2, and
Ivana Castillo Hurtado and
Charleigh Fay clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Heading into singles, Vial posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 for a 2-0 lead, while Fay won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 for a 3-0 lead. Prokic won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 to clinch the win. AUM posted a 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6 for a 4-1 score, Castillo Hurtado, ranked No. 53, won 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-7) for a 5-1 lead. AUM's No. 9-ranked Yakup Pour won 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 over Beckx for the 5-2 margin.
