MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No. 15 Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at top-ranked Barry Saturday morning. With the loss, the Blazers fell to 6-4 on the year, while Barry improved to 14-1.
Barry won all three doubles courts, dropping just two games for the early 1-0 lead. Heading to singles, the Lady Buccaneers took a 2-0 lead with a win by No. 30 Alina Michallisch over
Charleigh Fay, 6-2, 6-1, while No. 31 Viktoria Dema won 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 at the top spot over
Lena Beckx for a 3-0 lead. At No. 2, VSU's
Milica Prokic won the first set 6-2 over No. 8 Dana Heimen, but dropped the next two sets by 6-2 scores as BU clinched the match.
Despite the loss, the Blazers kept fighting as No. 65
Ivana Castillo Hurtado won 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 3 for a 4-1 score. BU won in straight sets at No. 5 as Anastasia Nikolva won 6-4, 6-3 over
Carmelle Vial for a 5-1 score. Blazer
Ena Arnautovic won the first set at No. 6 over Lucie Brun, but Brun responded with a 6-0, 1-0 (10-3) win the final two sets.
The Blazers travel to Flagler for a Wednesday match at 2 p.m., and then return home to host Auburn Montgomery in a key Gulf South Conference match on Friday at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
