VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball team split a midweek doubleheader against Rollins on Wednesday afternoon at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park, earning a 6-2 victory in game one before falling 4-3 in extra innings in game two.
With the split, the Blazers moved to 14-12 overall on the season.
Game 1: VSU 6, Rollins 2
Valdosta State used a big first inning and a dominant pitching performance to secure the opening game of the doubleheader.
Rollins struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Madi Carr, but the Blazers answered immediately with a six-run bottom half to take control of the game.
Saylor McNearney and
Annalise Buncy both reached base to start the rally before
Charlotte Phillips delivered an RBI single to tie the game.
Jayme Prandine followed with the biggest hit of the inning, ripping a three-run triple to give VSU a 4-1 lead. Later in the frame,
Krisley Arnold added a two-run double to extend the advantage to 6-1.
That early surge proved to be more than enough for the Blazers behind the steady arm of
Savannah Barfield. The right-hander went the distance, pitching all seven innings while allowing just two runs—only one earned—on five hits while striking out six to earn the win.
Rollins added a run in the seventh inning, but Valdosta State's defense held firm to close out the 6-2 victory. The Blazers finished with four hits in the game, with Prandine leading the offense with three RBIs and Arnold adding two RBIs.
Game 2: Rollins 4, VSU 3 (8 inn.)
The second game of the day turned into a tightly contested battle that required extra innings to decide.
Valdosta State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when
Saylor McNearney doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout from
Jayme Prandine.
The Blazers added to their lead in the second inning, taking advantage of a Rollins error before
Annalise Buncy delivered a two-run single to give VSU a 3-1 advantage.
Rollins chipped away at the deficit, tying the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Cambrie Todd after a leadoff double.
In extra innings, Rachel Matthiesen delivered the decisive blow for the Tars, launching her second home run of the game in the top of the eighth to give Rollins a 4-3 lead.
Valdosta State was unable to respond in the bottom half, as Rollins' Camila Leon-Blanco completed the game to secure the win. She allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out six across eight innings.
Giselle Portanova was charged with the loss after pitching six innings in relief, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Despite the loss, Buncy led the Blazers offensively in game two with two RBIs, while McNearney added a hit and a run scored.
Valdosta State will look to bounce back this weekend with a series versus Montevallo, with a doubleheader Friday starting at 2 p.m. E.T. and the second shortly after and the series finale Saturday at 1 p.m. E.T.
