Valdosta, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball team delivered a strong showing at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Delta State with an 8-3 victory in game one followed by a dramatic 3-2 walk-off win in game two.
With the two wins, the Blazers improved to 12-11 overall while the Lady Statesmen fell to 8-16 on the season.
Game 1: VSU 8, Delta State 3
Delta State struck first in the opening inning when Kyleigh Wheaton connected on a two-run home run to center field, giving the Lady Statesmen an early 2-0 lead.
The Lady Statesmen added another run in the fourth inning as Carly Dunigan singled and later scored on a triple from Hallie Turner to extend the lead to 3-0.
Valdosta State responded with a decisive inning in the bottom of the fourth. After
Madison VanAllen singled and
Annalise Buncy reached on a walk, a Delta State error allowed the Blazers to get on the board. Another defensive miscue brought home a second run before
Cailyn Cooke delivered a two-run single to left center, completing a four-run rally that gave VSU a 4-3 advantage.
The Blazers added to their lead in the sixth inning.
Alyssa Vallad and
Chloe Eichelberger opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Cooke drove in two more runs with another RBI single.
Saylor McNearney followed with a two-run single to center field, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Cooke paced the offense with a 2-for-3 performance and four RBI, while VanAllen also recorded two hits. McNearney added a hit and two RBI in the victory.
In the circle,
Giselle Portanova earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four across five innings.
Savannah Barfield closed the game with two scoreless innings to secure the save.
Game 2: VSU 3, Delta State 2
The second game of the day turned into a tightly contested pitching battle that was ultimately decided in the final inning.
Delta State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ally Agner delivered an RBI single that scored Carly Dunigan. The Lady Statesmen extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth as Maeve Lavoy hit a solo home run.
Valdosta State finally broke through in the sixth inning when
Saylor McNearney blasted a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Blazers completed the comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
Carly Bogart opened the inning with a double to left field before
Payton Parkes moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Rachel Lee then stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run to left center, giving Valdosta State a 3-2 walk-off victory.
Toree Wofford earned the win in relief, tossing four innings while allowing just one run on two hits.
Madison VanAllen started the game and worked three innings, giving up one run on three hits.
Offensively, the Blazers recorded five hits, highlighted by home runs from McNearney and Lee and a key double from Bogart to set up the winning run.
Valdosta State will look to complete the series sweep when the Blazers return to Steel's Diamond on Sunday for the series finale against Delta State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
