CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team (12-11, 9-8 Gulf South Conference) fell 63-49 on the road to Delta State (14-9, 12-6 GSC) Thursday evening.
The sides ended the first period even at 13-13 before Valdosta State took a two-point lead into halftime. The Lady Blazers took a three-point advantage into the final period of play, when the Lady Statesmen used a massive quarter to roar back to a 63-49 victory. Delta State out scored VSU 23-9 over the final 10 minutes to pull away.
Senior Aryana Hicks led Valdosta State offensively with 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting and a 6-of-7 effort at the free throw line while adding two assists and two steals. Junior Erin Whalen followed with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds along with two steals of her own.
Junior Jada Williams provided a spark off the bench with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, including a three-pointer. Freshman Rebecca Souverain added six points and four rebounds off the bench, while sophomore starter Ka'Miah Pryor contributed five rebounds and four points.
Valdosta State fought hard on the road and was able to lead for most of regulation before a difficult fourth quarter. Ultimately, 19 turnovers and a difficult night shooting from the field resulted in a Lady Statesmen victory.
Looking Forward
The Lady Blazers will finish out their Mississippi road trip on Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Mississippi College (9-14, 8-10 GSC) in Clinton, Miss.
