HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Valdosta State Blazers swept their second consecutive GSC weekend, as they mashed their way to a sweep of the Alabama Huntsville Chargers by winning game two 15-2 and sneaking by in game three with a 16-12 win.
Valdosta State is now alone in first place in the GSC as they are 7-1 in conference play as the Jan Weisberg era is off to a hot start in Titletown.
Starter
Hunter Booth picked up his second straight win as he 7.0 innings in game one and allowed one run on six hits while fanning six on a perfect 100 pitches. After allowing six earned runs in his first start. The right hander has allowed three earned runs over his last four starts while striking out 22 in 25.0 innings of work. Booth now leads the team in ERA as he holds a 2.79 on the season.
DJ Banks continued to get on base in the two hole as picked up a hit in each game to extend his on base streak to 17 games and his hitting streak to seven games.
Marcos Sevillano showed why he has the highest average in the GSC as the lefty tallied two hits in each game to raise his season batting average to .475 while driving in nine. Leadoff man
Pedro Moreno had himself a great Saturday as he went 6-11 at the dish while scoring six runs across two games while he also stole a bag.
It was all Blazers in game one, as they tallied 13 hits with four of them being for extra bases as
Cole Steinmetz,
Jovanni Canegitta, and
Marcos Sevillano all tallied doubles while
Easton Hood hit his team leading third home run of the year in the top of seventh to grow the lead to 9-1. VSU would run rule UAH in eight innings as they scored five in the top of the eighth to save the arms from throwing another inning.
It looked like it as going to be all Blazers in game two as they were leading 12-1 through four innings but once
Drake LaRoche was taken out, things got ugly as the VSU bullpen surrendered seven walks as the lead was 13-12 heading to the top of the seventh.
DJ Banks would come up clutch with a two RBI single before
Hunter Stowe followed suit with an RBI of his own as
Ryan Brown would continue to pitch in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order for a 16-12 win.
The Blazers come back to Titletown for five straight home games as they host Nova Southeastern for a two game series on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Mar. 5 at 4 p.m. before hosting West Alabama on Friday and Saturday for a weekend set.
