Blazer Women’s Tennis Hosts No. 1-ranked Barry and Georgia Gwinnett

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Coming off its first win of the season, the Valdosta State women's tennis team continues at home as it hosts No. 1-ranked Barry on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex, and will host No. 2-ranked (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Georgia Gwinnett on Monday at 10 a.m.
 
The Blazers posted a 5-0 win over Coastal Georgia on Saturday improving to 1-2 on the year after losses to Montevallo (5-2) and No. 13 Saint Leo (4-2). This spring, the Blazers are 7-7 in singles and 2-4 in doubles through three matches.  Against Coastal Georgia, VSU won the doubles point with a forfeit at No. 3 doubles and a 6-0 win by senior Viktoriia Fedorova and freshman Alyssa Novoa at No. 1 doubles.  The Blazers made quick work of the Mariners in singles as CGU didn't have a player at No. 6 for a forfeit and then sophomore Natalie Rainke posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top spot, while Fedorova won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 and sophomore Valentina Jimenez won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Individually for the season, Fedorova is 3-0 in singles to lead the team, while Rainke is 2-1.  In doubles, Fedorova and Novoa are 2-1. 
 
The Lady Buccaneers enter with a 7-1 record and winners of four-straight following a 4-3 loss to Division I Florida Gulf Coast in a match where Barry won the doubles point and had a 3-1 lead, before FGCU rattled off three-straight victories at Nos. 4, 2, and 1 for the win on Feb. 15.  Barry won all three matches at the ITA Indoor Championships and didn't lose a team point in the process, defeating Indianapolis, Embry-Riddle and Midwestern State, Feb. 21-23.  
 
This spring, Barry is 32-6 in singles and 19-2 in doubles as Dinara Alloiarova is 5-0 in singles as is Angela Leweurs and Louane Lutringer is 5-1, while Viktoriia Dema is 4-1.  In doubles, Andrea Di Palma and Ailen Crespo are 6-0 mainly at the No. 2 spot, while Lutringer/Alloiarova are 5-1 and Dema and Maria Tatarnikova are 4-1. 
 
Barry leads the all-time series 20-4 and has won 13-straight matches dating back to a VSU 6-3 win at Barry on Feb. 18, 2008.  
 
Georgia Gwinnett enters with a 7-1 record and its only blemish is a 4-1 loss to Keiser on Feb. 2.  Since the 2015-16 season, GGC has gone 179-7 overall with five undefeated seasons.  The team is 32-4 in singles this spring and 18-3 in doubles.  Isid Hernandez is 7-0 in singles mainly at No. 6, while Justine Lespes also is 7-0 and MaryLove Edwards is 6-1.  In doubles, Lespes and Cherysh Henry are 4-1, while Lespes and Edwards are 3-0 at No. 3.  Georgia Gwinnett is 3-0 all-time against VSU and won 4-0 in Valdosta on Feb. 8, 2020, in the previous meeting. GGC won 5-0 in Pensacola on Apr. 10, 2016 and 5-0 also in Pensacola on Apr. 4, 2015. 
 
VSU concludes its season-opening home stand on Friday at 2 p.m. versus No. 25 West Florida and then on Sunday at 10 a.m. versus No. 7 Lynn.
