Blazers Open GSC Play at Union for Weekend Series

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State baseball team will play their first Gulf South Conference series of the season as they travel north to Jackson, Tenn. for a three-game series with the Union Bulldogs. Friday, Feb. 14 will consist of a doubleheader with game one starting at 2 p.m. ET followed by game two after. Game three is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. ET.

Valdosta State enters this weekend series with a 1-6 record and are losers of four straight. Most recently, they fell to Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday night by a final of 17-14. Senior Easton Hood was electric for VSU, as the right fielder went 3-5 with four RBI, a double, and a game-tying home run in the bottom of fifth inning to even things at five. Left fielder Marcos Sevillano also put together a solid performance as the senior went 3-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and three runs scored for the Blazers. On the season, Sevillano is leading the team in batting average as the Jacksonville product is hitting .500 on seven hits while also leading the team in doubles with three. Hood is batting .417 with a total of five hits with three of them being for extra-bases as he leads the team in homers with two while also recording a double. DJ Banks is tied for the team lead in hits with eight as the second baseman is tied with Hood for the team lead in RBI with five. Orlando Pena has eight hits on the campaign while he is batting .320 in seven starts at the hot corner for head coach Jan Weisberg. Coach Weisberg's team is batting .275 as a team so far while averaging just over six runs a game. As for the pitching, opponents are hitting .292 on the VSU staff and have put up 9.2 runs per game while 8.2 are earned. Opponents are slugging .552 and are reaching base at a .379 clip.
 
The Union Bulldogs welcome the Blazers to town with a 3-4 record as they took two out of three at limestone before dropping three of four at UVA Wise. This will be the Bulldogs home opening series that was already altered due to rain with the forecast looking wet on Saturday. UU is led by head coach Casey McGehee, who is in his third season and is 34-64 overall. McGehee finished an eight-year major league baseball career with a .258 average, 67 home runs, 380 RBI, 141 doubles, 721 hits, and 285 runs. He recorded season-highs with a .301 average in 2009, and 23 home runs and 104 RBI in 2010, both seasons with the Brewers. His comeback season in 2014 included a .287 average with 76 RBI and 29 doubles with the Marlins. The Bulldogs top hitter this season has been Carson Chavies, who is batting .526 in six starts while leading the team in hits and RBI with ten each. Chavies has also been working the count as he has drawn four walks while only striking out two times in 19 at-bats early into the season. As a team, Union is hitting .303 while allowing the opposition to bat .286 in seven games. Union's ace is righty Eli Snelson, who is 1-0 in two starts and has an ERA of 3.27 so far. The Hartselle, Ala. product is holding opponents to a .289 batting average while walking two and striking out six in 11.0 innings pitched.
 
Following the weekend series, the Blazers make a quick trip on Tuesday, Feb. 18 for a single game against Columbus State before hosting Trevecca Nazarene starting on Friday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
