Blazers Look to Bounce Back Against the Hurricanes on Tuesday Night

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Following a rough weekend at home, the Valdosta State baseball team gets a chance to turn it around on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as they play host to Georgia Southwestern at 5 p.m. at Billy Grant Field for a midweek game.

The Blazers (1-5) were swept by the Embry-Riddle Eagles (4-2) this past weekend, as they outscored VSU 31-8 in three games at Billy Grant Field.

The Blazers and Hurricanes faced off twice last season as the Canes swept the series with a 10-1 win in Americus and a 9-7 win in Valdosta that went ten innings.

Four players are batting over .300 through six games of action, as senior Marcos Sevillano leads the way with a .400 BA in two starts while he has tallied four hits including a double in ten AB's. Senior Orlando Pena has been the most consistent bat of 2025, as the third baseman leads the team in hits with eight for a batting average of .364 in six starts at the hot corner. The Coastal Carolina transfer leads the team in doubles with two and has also tallied a team high ten total bases. Senior DJ Banks leads the Blazers in RBI as the second baseman has four on six hits while carrying a .316 BA and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 27 chances at second,

Following a perfect first start, senior Drake LaRoche ran into trouble on Sunday afternoon as the right hander only lasted two innings while allowing six hits and six earned runs in his first start at Billy Grant Field. The Valdosta State starting pitchers are 1-4 through six games with a 19 combined earned runs in 26.1 innings pitched. Senior Ryan Brown was nearly perfect in his lone appearance over the weekend as the southpaw went two innings on Friday night and allowed a single baserunner while striking out two.

Georgia Southwestern travels to Titletown carrying a record of 4-3 through seven games as they were most recently swept by Florida Southern last weekend in Florida. The Hurricanes are led by head coach Josh McDonald, who is in his seventh year at the helm of GSW where he holds an overall record of 150-130. Utility player Cory Lee leads the Canes in batting average as he holds a .414 average on 12 hits including a home run while driving in three. Lee picked up four hits in six at-bats last year in Valdosta as he was on base all evening. Graduate student Andrew Geiger has been a stud on the mound as he is 1-1 on the 2025 campaign while carrying an ERA of 1.93 with a team high 11 strikeouts and seven hits allowed in 14.0 innings of work as a starter.

Following Tuesday's matchup, Valdosta State will open GSC play on the road as they make the trek to Jackson, Tenn. to play Union in a three-game set starting on Friday night at 5 p.m. ET followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
