NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team battled hard on the road tonight but came up short against Trevecca Nazarene, falling 63-56 in a competitive Gulf South Conference matchup. Valdosta State (3-6, 1-3 GSC) stayed within striking distance throughout and lead at halftime but couldn't overtake the Trojans (6-3, 3-2 GSC) down the stretch.
Sophomore Raeanne Eccleston led the Lady Blazers with 14 points. Junior Erin Whalen followed with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds, showing grit on both ends of the floor. Ka'Miah Pryor chipped in seven points and Rebecca Souverain had six in limited minutes off the bench. VSU battled through stretches of tough defense and fought to keep the game close.
VSU led at the halftime break, but the Trojans would respond by winning both quarters of the second half. Trevecca Nazarene got balanced scoring and a strong night from Cheyenne Trotter, who finished with 15 points. Tatum Shaw scored 11 and Jordan Gillies added 10 to help keep the hosts in control. Trevecca's bench production and efficiency in key moments allowed them to hold onto the lead in the fourth quarter.
Valdosta State now turns its focus back to conference play as they look to regroup and build off the effort tonight.
Looking Forward
The Lady Blazers continue their trip to the Volunteer State on Saturday when they take on Lee University (6-3, 3-2 GSC). The Lady Flames earned a victory at home over West Florida tonight.
