VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead at halftime Friday evening, but was unable to hang on as visiting Delta State scored two goals in the second half for a 2-1 Delta State victory.
The Blazers fell to 4-8-4 overall and 2-7-1 and will host Mississippi College on Sunday for Senior Day at 1 p.m., at the VSU Soccer Complex. Prior to the match, VSU will honor five seniors playing in their final regular season match in a Blazer uniform at approximately 12:45 p.m.
Delta State had the early pressure and the first shot of the game from Emma Earwood just over six minutes into the contest. DSU had two corners and a shot from Janya Gonzalez and save by senior
Claire Timberlake 11:27 into the match.
Later in the half, DSU's Chloe Colquhoun had a great look and a great save from Timberlake. On the counter, DSU goalkeeper Piper Burgess came out to challenge a loose ball, but Blazer junior
Tatyana Machado was in the right place and the ball ricocheted off the keeper for a score and a 1-0 VSU lead 28:58 into the match. It was Machado's second score of the season.
DSU finished with seven shots and five on frame, while VSU had just the one shot on goal and scored on it. Timberlake had five saves in the frame.
The Lady Statesmen scored the equalizer on a serve into the box and score from Avery Hooker at the 53:24 mark for a 1-1 score. A nice run by DSU and score from Colquhoun and an assist from Hooker gave the Lady Statesmen a 2-1 lead at the 60:27 mark.

The Lady Statesmen (6-5-4, 5-3-3 GSC) finished with 12 shots and eight on target, while VSU had five shots and three on frame. Timberlake finished with six saves, while Burgess had two saves.
Five different Blazers had shots with Machado scoring the lone goal, while Hooker had thee shots and three on goal with a score and an assist for Delta State.
