No. 11 Valdosta State Falls in Overtime Thriller to No. 4 Alabama Huntsville at The Complex

Story Links

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 11 Valdosta State Blazers fell in an overtime thriller to the No. 4 Alabama Huntsville Chargers on Monday night at The Complex. Following the loss, VSU drops to 16-3 overall and 11-2 in GSC play while UAH earned their 18th straight win for an overall record of 18-1 and a perfect 13-0 in the GSC.

In a game that featured 17 lead changes, Valdosta State had the chance to win the game in regulation, but a putback from senior Cobey Harraway fell off the rim at the buzzer to send us to overtime. Once things hit extra time, it was back and forth until senior Carlos Hart was sent to the line with 16 seconds left to try and give the Blazers the lead, where his two free throws just missed off the iron. Following the miss, UAH star Tommy Murry drove to the paint and threw up a tough floater that missed and bounced around on the floor until it fell right into the lap of big man Daniel Saylor, who underhanded a layup from five feet out with 0.7 seconds left to seal the win.

Guard Blake Campbell led all players in scoring, as the Charger scored 30 points on 12-21 from the floor and 5-6 from the line as he was muscling his way inside all night. Junior Drew Mills was the catalyst for the Blazers, as the Baltimore native scored 21 first half points on 5-6 from deep to propel the VSU offense in the first 20 minutes. Mills would finish the night with 27 points on 11-20 from the field and 5-8 from distance while hauling in a season-high 12 rebounds with five of them being on the offensive end. After going scoreless in the first half on just five minutes of action due to foul trouble, senior Carlos Hart put together a solid performance of 17 second half points and seven boards while tallying two blocks and steals for the second consecutive game. Junior Maalik Leitch was lethal off the bench in his second straight game, as the guard scored 15 points on 6-12 from the floor and tied the team lead in assists with three.

As the score indicated, both teams battled hard all night, as VSU finished with a shooting clip of .432/.323/.529 as free throws was the Blazers' one weakness. For UAH, they finished with a clip of .486/.286/.708 as it was the Chargers' third worst three-point shooting contest of the season. Alabama Huntsville kept control of the ball, as they only coughed it up a total of nine times which is the least amount of turnovers Valdosta State has forced in a game all season despite the five extra minutes of overtime.

Valdosta State will now have to turn the page and start another win streak, as they head to Pensacola to face West Florida on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. ET for a battle with the Argos to open a three-game roadtrip.
