SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 27 Valdosta State women's tennis' upset bid of No. 13 Saint Leo came up short on Wednesday afternoon as the Blazers fell 4-2. VSU stands at 8-11 overall, while SLU improved to 14-8.
The doubles portion saw freshman
Natalie Rainke and sophomore
Evelyn Altmaier down Kamilya Shalina and Madelyn Martin, 6-2 at No. 3, while SLU won the top two doubles matches each by the score of 7-5. In a ranked matchup at the top spot, VSU duo of freshman
Denisa Hanakova and junior Viktoria Fedorova, ranked 35
th nationally, came up just short to No. 21-ranked tandem of Lavinia Lacellotti and Luiza Obermeier. SLU's Claudia Borbon Roca and Catherine Rabatin defeated junior
Kayla Greco and freshman
Aneta Poborilova.
In singles, Poborilova evened the match with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Lacellotti, who was ranked No. 71 nationally. No. 37 Obermeier won at the top spot over Hanakova, 7-5, 6-2 for a 2-1 SLU lead. Shalina won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 over Greco for a 3-1 lead, while Rainke won 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 over Borbon Roca at No. 2 for a 3-2 deficit. Rabatin then won 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 over Altmaier at No. 6 to clinch the match.
The Blazers have a quick turnaround as they play at West Georgia on Thursday at 2 p.m., before returning home for the regular season finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Lee at the VSU Tennis Complex.
