CARROLLTON, Ga. – The No. 27 Valdosta State women's tennis team defeated West Georgia 7-0 on Thursday afternoon in the final meeting between the two teams as NCAA Division II members. The Blazers improved to 9-11 overall and 7-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Georgia ended its season at 6-10 overall and 2-8 in GSC play.
The Wolves are moving to NCAA Division I next season, while VSU evened the Red Clay Rivalry Series at 4-4 with the win. The teams have three game series' next week in baseball and softball in Carrollton, while the men's golf teams play in the Gulf South Conference Championship Monday-Wednesday next week at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.

For the tennis match on Thursday, the Blazers won two of three doubles matches to take the early lead as junior
Kayla Greco and freshman
Aneta Poborilova won 6-2 at No. 2 double and freshman
Natalie Rainke and sophomore
Evelyn Altmaier won 6-3 at No. 3. UWG's duo of Sophie Mnich and Andrea Medel upset No. 35-ranked Blazer duo of freshman
Denisa Hanakova and junior
Viktoriia Fedorova, 6-1.
VSU claimed five of the six singles matches in straight-sets to win the match, while Hanakova won the first set 6-1 at the top spot over Lea Von Kozierowski, but dropped the second 6-1, before rallying for a 6-3 victory in the third to complete the shutout.
The Blazers close the 2023-24 regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex versus Lee in a critical GSC match for seeding purposes in the upcoming GSC Championship.
