SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a classic matchup of two of the top three teams in NCAA Division II men's tennis, the No. 3-ranked Valdosta State Blazers came away victorious with a 4-3 win at top-ranked Saint Leo Wednesday afternoon in a critical match for NCAA postseason seeding purposes.
The Blazers, who trailed early, responded nicely as senior
Christian Wedel won at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 over Dylan Andrinaly to clinch the match. SLU had knotted the match at 3-3 with a win by Luis Irirate over sophomore
Jan Skerbatis, but Wedel closed the book on the Lions, securing VSU's victory. The win by the Blazers (16-3) snapped Saint Leo's 13-match winning streak (19-2).
The doubles portion of the match saw No. 11 Blazer tandem of seniors
Rodrigo Carvalho and Luca Match downed Irirate and Martin Soukal, who were No. 50 nationally, 6-3. The Lions then won at Nos. 2 and 3 with a pair of 6-4 victories to claim the team point.
In singles, freshman
Jerome Iaconi won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles over Ghali Monsour for a 1-1 score, but Mack, ranked 26
th nationally, retired in the second set trailing 6-4, 3-0 to No. 2-ranked Soukal for a 2-1 SLU lead. No. 28-ranked junior
Boruch Skierkier used a thrilling 9-7 victory in a first set tiebreak and won the second set 6-3, upsetting No. 5-ranked Vincent Thiel leveling the match at 2-2. Skierkier improved to 18-0 this spring. No. 6-ranked junior
Takeshi Taco battled back from a 6-4 loss in the first set at No. 3 winning the second set 6-4 and claiming the third set 6-2 over Nicolas Basella for a 3-2 lead, prior to the final two matches.
The Blazers will close out the regular season on Sunday at home versus No. 23 Lee at 1 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
