No. 3 Blazers Notch Seventh-Straight Victory with 4-1 Win Sunday; Share GSC Regular Season Title

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 3 Valdosta State men's tennis team ended the regular season with its seventh-straight victory in a 4-1 win over No. 23 Lee Sunday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Complex.

The Blazers improved to 17-3 on the year and 8-1 in Gulf South Conference play, earning a share of the regular season title with West Florida.  Lee fell to 11-3 on the year and 6-3 in GSC play.  VSU will be the No. 2-seed in the upcoming GSC Championship, beginning next Saturday in Montgomery, Ala., and will face No. 7-seed Montevallo in the quarterfinal round.  Check back with vstateblazers.com later this week for a preview of the conference championship.

On Sunday, the Flames opened winning two of the three doubles matches for the early lead as Francisco Faria and Filipe Krohn upset No. 11 Blazer duo of seniors Rodrigo Carvalho and Luca Mack, 6-4 at the top spot.  Lee's duo of Mike Groenedijk and Quinn Groenendijk won at No. 2 over junior Takeshi Taco and junior Xaveam Van Wijk, 6-3, while No. 28-ranked Blazer tandem of junior Boruch Skierkier and sophomore Jan Skerbatis won 6-4 over Jordi Dasi and Wihan van der Merwe, 6-4.

Blazer senior Christian Wedel won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles over Q. Groenendijk for a 1-1 score and Taco, ranked sixth nationally, won 6-4, 6-2 over van der Merwe, who was 65th nationally, for a 2-1 Blazer lead.  Then the rain came and a lengthy delay.  Once the courts were dry enough to play again – it was all Blazers.

VSU, who had won the first set in all six singles matches, continued to fire on all cylinders as Skerbatis won 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 and freshman Jerome Iaconi won 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 for the victory.  Van Wijk was up 4-3 in the third set, while Skierkier, ranked No. 28 nationally, was up 6-5 in the second set over Faria, who is ranked 38th, when the match was clinched.
