Blazer Baseball Welcomes the Chargers for Weekend Clash

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State Blazer baseball team will welcome in the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville for a three-game series starting on Friday, Mar. 15 at 5 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 16 starting at 1 p.m.

The game will be available for viewing at blazersportsmedia.com and listening on 94.3 WJEM FM/foxsportsvaldosta.com with Bill Malone on the call for both days.

Saturday is a pretty special day for Blazer baseball, as the 1979 NCAA Division II National Championship team will be honored beforehand. Introductions will begin around 20 minutes from first pitch.

Alabama Huntsville travels to Titletown with a 14-9 (3-6 GSC) record through a little over a month into the season. The Chargers are led by head coach Hunter Royer, who is in his 15th season at the helm of the program. During his time in Huntsville, Royer holds a career record of 415-272-2 and has led UAH to the NCAA South Regional three times during his career. Royer's offense is one of the best in the GSC, as UAH is bating a league best .317 as they average 6.6 runs per game. The Chargers' offense is led by sophomore infielder Merik Carter, who is second in the league in batting average and hits is currently sitting at a .440 average and is currently on a 11-game hitting streak. In 21 starts, Carter is first on the team in RBIs with 20 and tied for the lead in homers with three. On the mound, Alabama Huntsville likes to go with junior Jacob Peters, who is 3-2 in six starts and currently holds an ERA of 4.83 in 31.2 innings pitched.

For the Blazers, they are led by head coach Greg Guilliams who is in his 17th year as the leader of the VSU baseball team and currently holds a 11-10 (6-6 GSC) record after they dropped their most recent game at Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday night. Individually, the Blazers are led in hitting by senior Ryan Romano, who is currently ranked first in the GSC and 33rd nationally in batting average with a .455 clip. Outside of Romano, sophomore Dennis Pierce had himself a weekend, as the corner infielder slugged two homers and drove in nine Blazers in three-game series at West Alabama. The slugger is leading the team in home runs with five and has driven in 30 on the season, which is tied for second in the GSC. Senior catcher Jacob Harper has had a great last ride, as the VSU backstop is second in the conference in on-base percentage with a .562 and leads the team in walks with 20. On the hill, Valdosta State has gone with many different arm options, but they have been led by the recent success of redshirt junior Hunter Booth. Booth has gone six straight appearances without allowing a run while striking out seven in 14.1 innings pitched.

Following this weekend clash, Valdosta State will stay in town to host Eckerd on Tuesday, Mar. 19 at 5 p.m. and then Nova Southeastern on for a three-game set on Friday, Mar. 22, and Saturday Mar. 23.
