HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A 25-11 first quarter proved to be too much for the Valdosta State women's basketball team in a 73-53 loss at Alabama Huntsville Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Blazers were led by 14 points from sophomore
Erin Whalen on 6 of 12 from the field, 1 of 4 from distance and 1 of 2 from the line. She had a team-high five rebounds as the only Lady Blazer in double figures. VSU fell to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Blazers shot 43.4 percent from the field on 23 of 53 shooting, while they were 5 of 24 from distance and just 2 of 6 from the line.
UAH improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in GSC play as it had five players in double figures led by 15 points from Lili Wilken who was 6 of 13 from the field, 2 of 3 from distance and 4 of 4 from the line. UAH held a 37-21 advantage on the glass. The Chargers shot 27 of 52 from the field for a 51.9 average and was 7 of 16 from distance.
The Chargers raced out to an 11-2 lead through the first four minutes and change. VSU would cut the deficit to 13-7 on a triple from senior
India Jordan. A pair of bookend triples from Mollie Brown pushed the lead to 14 at 21-7 with 2:10 to play in the quarter. A pair of buckets from Jordan cut the deficit back to ten, but Wilken scored the final four points of the frame for the 25-11 score.
Whalen cut the deficit under ten with a fastbreak bucket for a 30-21 deficit with 4:47 remaining in the half, but UAH answered with a bucket and a triple from Brown, pushing the lead back to 14 moments later. Over the final 4:47, UAH outscored VSU 11-3 for a 41-24 advantage at the break.
In the third, VSU would cut the deficit back to 15 twice, but each time the Chargers would answer and held a 60-43 lead through three frames. UAH stretched lead the to as many as 23 in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Blazers return home to host West Florida on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. at The Complex.
