VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind a career-high 26 points and six assists, Valdosta State women's basketball junior guard
Mary McMorris was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
McMorris, a native of Las Vegas, Nev., went 10 of 16 from the field, 4 of 5 from distance and 2 of 2 from the line, while pulling down four rebounds with six assists and two steals in an 87-60 victory last Tuesday at Clayton State. McMorris and the Lady Blazers improved to 5-1 on the year with the win and held the Lakers to just 32.1 percent shooting, while the VSU offense shot a season-best .542 from the field on 32 of 59. VSU tied its season-high with 11 made 3-pointers in the game and pulled down a season-high 53 rebounds in the contest.
She is the second Lady Blazer to earn GSC Player of the Week honors as senior
Kiersten Nelson earned the accolade on Nov. 26, marking back-to-back award recipients for VSU. This season, McMorris is averaging 10.8 points per game on 21 of 48 from the field (.438), while she is second on the team in made 3-pointers on 8 of 15 (.533) and is 15 of 19 from the line (.789) for second on the team in made free throws. McMorris has 17 assists for second on the team and a team-high ten steals in six games with four starts.
McMorris and the Lady Blazers open Gulf South Conference play on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET at West Alabama (0-4) and then on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at Alabama Huntsville (4-1).
