VALDOSTA, Ga. – Newly hired Valdosta State assistant baseball coach J.D. Hulse was named ABCA/Marines Division III Assistant Coach of Year, announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday morning.
Coach Hulse recently joined head coach Jan Weisberg from Division III Birmingham-Southern College, as they made national news on their cinderella run through the Division III Baseball Championship after the school had announced they were going to shut their doors for good. BSC was the last team to ever represent their school on their chest as they made their way through the championship as the seven seed before eventually falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"This is a well-deserved honor for JD. Over the past eight years he was an integral part of the BSC program remaining as one of the elite programs in NCAA Division III baseball. His work ethic, loyalty to the program and investment in the players were a huge part of our three Super Regional and two World Series appearances over the past five years. Those who know or have been a part of our program are well aware of how deserving he is." – Head Coach Jan Weisberg
Prior to Valdosta State, Hulse spent seven seasons with Birmingham-Southern College. During his time with BSC, Hulse earned Alabama Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019 after the Panthers went 42-15 and finished national runner-up. Hulse played college ball at Birmingham-Southern, where he was coach Weisberg's first recruiting class at BSC in 2007. Hulse was a four-year starter in center field as he earned All-SCAC three times. He finished his career ninth all-time in runs scored and tenth in stolen bases for the SCAC.
